Nov. 24, 2022 - Happy Thanksgiving
Read MoreToday is the day that Americans celebrate Thanksgiving. The traditional way of celebrating is to have a family gathering and serve roast turkey as the main course. Here’s a similar bird I saw in Australia. This is an Australian Brushturkey. Even though it has some similar features, it’s not closely related to our Wild Turkey.

The Brushturkey is a large bird, 23.5 to 27.5 inches long. It’s not shy: we saw them in many different places and they just ignored us and went about their business of finding things to eat.

With its mostly black body, red neck, and yellow collar, it’s not likely to be confused with any other species. One interesting feature of this bird is its tail, which is oriented vertically instead of horizontally.

A Brushturkey can fly, but it prefers to stay on the ground and run if it senses danger.
