Aug. 8, 2021 - Wildflowers
Read MoreBack in July, I showed you the wildflowers that had bloomed up until then in our wildflower garden. Shortly after that, many more flower species opened up. Here are photos of them.
This is Butterflyweed. There aren’t many orange wildflowers, and this is one of the showiest of them. It’s aptly named. Many butterfly species, including Monarchs, are attracted to it.ButterflyWeedWildflowerGardenDunningLakeItascaCounty20210708
This is a Long-headed Coneflower. Typically, the cone is longer than the yellow petals.

This unusual-looking flower is called Canada Milk-vetch.

Black-eyed Susan is probably more accurately described as Brown-eyed Susan. In fact, I have found it listed in wildflower guides using either name. It is a bright, cheerful addition to our garden with its 10 to 20 yellow petals surrounding a brown center.

This Tawny Day Lily looks like a cultivated flower, but it is actually listed in one of our wildflower guide books. This species is originally from Asia and was brought to the United States as a garden plant. It escaped into the wild and has become naturalized. We have only one of these plants and it has an interesting history. Many years ago, we found some of these lilies growing along an old mining road near our home. We dug one up and planted it in our yard. When we decided to make a wildflower garden, this plant was in the selected area. That part of the yard was roto-tilled and treated to kill off all the existing vegetation so we could start fresh. After the wildflowers were planted, we were amazed to see this lily appear again the very next year. That is one tough plant!
We still have a few wildflowers that will bloom this fall (asters, goldenrod). But the garden is at its peak of color, so I took a quick video to show you all the Sunflowers and Bergamot that have bloomed. We are so pleased to have a variety of plants that give us a colorful garden throughout the summer. Click on the camera icon in the lower left corner to see the video.
