Read MoreI was disappointed that I cut off one wing of this Royal Tern. But as I studied the photo, I noticed that this bird had very dark wing tips and a line of black across the back edge of its wings. That’s not what I usually see in this species. I looked it up in my Sibley Guide to Birds and found that this is typical of “juvenile” plumage. That means this bird was hatched last year and is gradually transitioning to adult plumage.
