Sept. 20, 2020 - Fall Colors

This past week, Diana and I took a trip to the North Shore and spent three days in Grand Marais, MN. Fall color season has begun, and here are some photos from that trip. This is a view from the Caribou Trail which runs north from the town of Lutsen, MN.

A side road off the Caribou Trail gave us close-up views of these colorful trees.

The Honeymoon Trail has lots of colorful maple trees and is a favorite route of ours in the fall. It connects the Caribou Trail and the Sawbill Trail. The mature trees along this trail hang over the road making it feel like you are driving through a tunnel of trees. This is just the start of the fall color season. Note that most of the leaves are still on the trees and only a few are on the ground. Also, some trees, like the one on the left side of this photo, are still green.

One morning I was birding along Cook County Road 48 and came across this colorful combination of white birch trunks with red and yellow leaves around them.

During our drive back home, along Hwy 61, we saw many scenes like this: high rocky hills with trees beginning to show their fall colors. This photo was taken near Silver Bay, MN.
