March 1, 2020 - Florida Flowers

While we are in Florida, I enjoy photographing some of the flowers that are blooming at this time of the year. This Blanket Flower was growing on the sand dunes along the St. George Island beach. In Minnesota we also get a variety of Blanket Flower that grows during the summer.

This small yellow flower was on a Golden Rain Tree near the home we are renting.

UPDATE: This flower is probably Easter cassia (Senna pendula).

When we arrived at the beginning of January, I saw this flower blooming in many places on St. George Island. I used the app called Garden Answers to identify it as Maternity Plant.

Hibiscus plants are very common here in Florida. This one was growing on St. George Island.

Lantana plants are known for their brightly colored clusters of small flowers. These plants can be a problem when they form a dense thicket and crowd out native species. This photo was taken at Alligator Point.

I was birding on a boardwalk in Apalachicola when I photographed this flower. I later showed it to a University of Florida Extension Agent, and he identified it as Poison Hemlock. Then I was glad I had only photographed it and not tried to examine it.

UPDATE: This flower has been identified as Water Hemlock (Cicuta maculata). It is even more poisonous than Poison Hemlock, in fact it might be the most poisonous plant in North America.

I took a picture of this small yellow flower at the St. George Island State Park. Diana later helped me identify it as Narrowleaf Evening Primrose.

UPDATE: this is probably Georgia Frostweed (Crocanthemum georgianum).

Dune Sunflowers grow not only on the sand dunes but also along the roads here on St. George Island.

Last year when I posted flower photos, I had some that I couldn’t identify and several of you helped me out by telling me what they were. This year I’m hoping I can get some help with this one.

UPDATE: this flower has been identified as False Rosemary (Conradina canescens).
