June 7, 2020 - More flowers

Last week I showed you some of the early blooming wildflowers in our yard. This week I have some photos of flowers that are not wild. Last year we added more landscaping around our house. This included several Bleeding Heart plants which are now responding with lots of flower stalks like this one. As you can see, bees also like these flowers.

We have three crabapple trees next to our garage. They were covered with apple blossoms about a week ago. I can tell that many of them were pollinated because tiny apples are now growing on the trees.

The flowers on our Lilac bushes attract bees, butterflies, dragonflies, and other pollinators. They also give off a very fragrant scent when we cut a few of them and put them in a vase on our table.

The catkins hanging from our oak tree are actually spent male flowers. The female flowers are the little brown bumps along the branch. They become acorns after the wind blows pollen on them from the male flowers.

OK, this photo doesn’t really show flowers. I just thought the green Maple leaves and the brown seeds hanging below them made an interesting photo.

Large-flowered Trillium does grow as a wildflower in Minnesota, but these blossoms are part of a landscaping project from two years ago. We’re happy to see them thriving and they even started expanding with new plants showing up this year.
