April 5, 2020 - Favorite Bird Photos From Florida

Here are some of my favorite bird photos from our Jan-Feb visit to Florida this year.

On one of my visits to Bald Point State Park, this Mourning Dove flew into a tree and stayed in this perfect pose long enough for me to take its picture.

This Great Blue Heron was on the beach at St. George Island State Park. It was stationed near a fisherman hoping to get a handout. I like how the breeding plumes on its head and neck are gently swaying in the breeze. I also like the wave in the background that nicely frames the bird’s head and upper body.

One morning my friend John Murphy and I were birding at Alligator Point. This Barred Owl was intently scanning the ground below for something to eat. The rising sun gave a beautiful golden glow to the background.

This flight shot of a Brown Pelican was taken at Sikes Cut on St. George Island.

At Sikes Cut there are always lots of terns flying around. I assumed that they were all Foresters Terns. Later, when I looked at the photos on my computer, the yellow tip on the end of this bird’s beak made me realize that it was, in fact, a Sandwich Tern. In northern Florida I usually don’t see Sandwich Terns in the winter.

There is a place along the river in Apalachicola where I can reliably find a group of Black-crowned Night-Herons. One morning at that place I was fortunate to get a shot of a juvenile flying over the river.
