Feb. 3, 2019 - St. George Island, Florida

Here are some photos taken on St. George Island, Florida, where Diana and I are again staying during January and February. You know how large a Great Blue Heron is, so just imagine the size of these rocks. Rocks like these line both sides of Bob Sikes Cut, the channel between St George Island and Little St. George Island. This channel was dredged out in 1954 to provide easy access from Apalachicola to the Gulf of Mexico.

Northern Mockingbirds are very common residents here on the island. They have been quiet so far, but we will soon be enjoying their extensive repertoire of songs. This photo was taken near Sikes Cut.

When we have a very humid morning, I look for spider webs like this one that are coated with dew. It makes me appreciate all the work that spiders do to get their food. It also makes me aware of all the webs that are around.

Another common bird found on the island is the Gray Catbird. It likes to stay hidden in the brush and I often hear its meow-like call before I see it. This photo was taken at a small park near the home we are renting.

At another local park, I found these small white snails clinging to the old cattail stalks.

About two blocks away from where we are staying is a small pond. In the evening, Great Egrets congregate in the trees surrounding the pond. This is apparently a safe overnight roosting spot for them.
