April 7, 2019 - Great Horned Owl Nest - 2

This is a continuation of the owl family story I started last week. While the baby owls were still small, one adult would stay with them while the other adult went off hunting for food.

By February 18, the babies were big enough that they could be left alone for a time while both adults went hunting.

On February 22, the babies were getting quite large. They are still covered with their baby down feathers but, as I’ll show you next week, their wing feathers were developing.

I was fortunate to be able to watch one adult feeding the two babies. We can’t see what was on the menu that day but notice one of the young ones eagerly reaching out to get the food.

At this stage of their development, the adult still needs to tear the food into small pieces for the babies.
