March 11, 2018 - Bird Photos with Props - 2

While we were in Florida, I was experimenting with various props to get photos of birds. This is a log I found, and it had a stump sticking up that made a perfect perch for the birds. An indentation behind the upright stump provided a place where I could hide some homemade suet. Yellow flowers and a vine gave some added color.

A Gray Catbird was the first one to show up. True to its name, it is mostly gray, but notice its black cap and the rusty-colored feathers under its tail.

A Northern Mockingbird also landed on the stump. Eventually, this bird was a problem because it became very territorial and chased all the other birds away.

A female Eastern Towhee landed on the log, rather than on the stump. As in one of the pictures from last week, this view gives a nice clean background behind the bird but still includes some of the flowers and vines.

Here’s a male Eastern Towhee. He has black feathers where the female has brown feathers.

This flower arrangement was smaller than the one I showed last week so it’s more appropriately sized for a Yellow-rumped Warbler. You can see the yellow feathers that give this bird its name.
