Here’s one last set of photos from our trip to Oregon last fall. We visited Wildlife Safari Park where they have free-roaming animals from around the world. Today I’m featuring deer-like animals from the park. This is a Blackbuck. It is found in India, Nepal, and Pakistan. I think the knobs on the ends of its antlers are put there by the park staff to keep it from injuring other animals.

Fallow Deer originated in Eurasia but have been introduced to other parts of the world. This is a mature buck and a fawn.

Here is a male Fallow Deer with his harem of females. The dark deer on the far left is probably an immature male.

Common Cape Eland are found in southern Africa. They are large antelope, with males measuring 5 feet tall at the shoulder. Note the spiral horns.

This Gemsbok appears to be missing one of its horns. Gemsbok are also found in southern Africa.

Guanaco live in the southern parts of South America. It was raining the day we visited the park and this animal’s dense coat was saturated with water.

The Scimitar Oryx inhabited north Africa, but it was over hunted to the point that in 2000, it was declared extinct in the wild. Today, there are several captive breeding programs with the intention of reintroducing these animals to their native range.

Barbary Sheep are now rare in their native habitat in north Africa. However, they have been introduced to Spain, the southwestern United States, Hawaii, Mexico, and some other parts of Africa. They prefer mountainous areas where their agility allows them to move freely over rocky, steep terrain.
