One of Florida’s most spectacular birds is the Roseate Spoonbill. It’s a large wading bird, about 32 inches tall. These shots were all taken at Ding Darling NWR on Sanibel Island.
This spoonbill is getting ready to take off. The pale pink color of its feathers and the white feathers on top of its head indicate this is a juvenile bird. An adult would have more deeply colored feathers and a bald head.
In the evening, Spoonbills, Ibis, and other birds gather in this shallow area of water along the wildlife drive. This is a safe place for them to spend the night. Here is a Spoonbill coming in for a landing.
