Aug. 5, 2018 - Costa Rica - Toucans
Read MoreWe saw many kinds of spectacular birds in Costa Rica but among my favorites were the Toucans. This Keel-billed Toucan was photographed at the Rainforest Lodge in Sarapiquis. At 18 inches long, it is a large, conspicuous bird. Of course, its most distinguishing feature is the huge, multi-colored bill. One of our guides had fun calling them the “Fruit Loops Toucan.”
That huge bill is actually quite dexterous. Here’s a Keel-billed toucan preening itself at the Rainforest Lodge.

Here’s my favorite photo from the whole trip. These two Keel-billed Toucans are each offering the other one a seed. I’m assuming this is some kind of courtship display.
This photo, along with more than 25 others, is available as a cell phone cover here on my web site. Click on this link to see all of them.
