Nov. 26, 2017 - Oregon - Familiar Birds

Last week I showed you photos of some western bird species from our trip to Oregon in October. I also found birds that we regularly see in Minnesota and here are some of those photos. Wild Turkeys are a familiar sight in Minnesota, even in urban areas. We saw a pair of Wild Turkeys in Bandon’s City Park.

Red-breasted Nuthatches are year-round residents in Minnesota, especially in the north. This one perched on top of a dead evergreen tree in China Creek Park, near Bandon, Oregon.

Song Sparrows are found throughout Minnesota in summer but in winter they move farther south. This is a typical Song Sparrow found in the Pacific Northwest and it is darker than the ones we see in Minnesota. This photo was taken near Table Rock in Bandon.

European Starlings are year-round residents across the United States so it’s not surprising we also saw them in Oregon. I know they have a bad reputation but when they show off their freshly molted plumage, they are very colorful birds.

In Minnesota, we only see White-crowned Sparrows during their spring and fall migration trips. They winter in the southern states and spend the summer in Canada. Along the Oregon coast, they are year-round residents. This photo was taken in the yard of the house we rented in Bandon.

This juvenile White-crowned Sparrow was also foraging in the yard of the house we rented, and it found something of interest.
