Dec. 10, 2017 - Wildlife Safari Park - 1

Our October trip to Oregon also included a visit to Wildlife Safari Park in Winston, Oregon. It’s a huge park and they display animals from Asia, Africa, and North and South America. You drive your own car through the park and the animals are free to roam within their areas. When we got to the bear area, this was our first look at a Brown Bear. I just didn’t expect to see a bear in a sitting position.

This is how you expect to see a bear when it’s moving around. Brown Bears are also known as Grizzly Bears. Notice the length of the claws.

In the North American area, there was a small herd of Bison. It had been raining before we got to the park so the hair of this animal, especially on the head, still looks wet.

One of our favorite sightings was this Giraffe. It was standing right in the middle of the road, so we had to just stop and wait for it to finish eating before it moved on. Giraffes can be 15 to 20 feet tall. You don’t realize how tall that is until you are right next to one of them.

Because we were so close, I was able to get a nice shot of its head and face.

A giraffe’s height allows it to feed on leaves that other animals have no chance of reaching. It’s tongue, which can be 18 inches long, is helpful for pulling the leaves into its mouth.
