Diana and I took our annual fall trip to the North Shore during the last half of September. We found some wildflowers still blooming at Gooseberry Falls State Park. This is a group of Brown-eyed Susan’s. Goldfinches and House Finches are especially fond of the seeds.
I like to go birding on lightly travelled gravel roads when we visit the North Shore. Spectacular scenes like this are common in these undisturbed areas. This photo was taken from the General Grade Road and shows the west branch of the Baptism River.
We try to time our visit to coincide with the fall color season. This year the colors were a little behind so they hadn’t reached their peak yet. We did find some very beautiful trees like these, however.
Back roads along the North Shore provide some nice vantage points for seeing fall colors. This photo was taken at the intersection of the Temperance River Road and the 600 Road in Cook County.
There was a full moon the night after we arrived. I drove to an overlook along Highway 61 and took this photo of the moon rising over Split Rock Lighthouse.
