Last week’s photos featured birds in flight. I took those photos at a workshop in Texas. There were lots of Northern Cardinals at the ranch so here are some Cardinals in flight. This male Cardinal looks like he is floating on air.
People often dismiss female Cardinals because they are not as brilliantly colored as the males. However, when they spread their wings and tail, they show off the subtle red colors that are usually hidden from view.
Here’s another look at the same female Cardinal. I can tell it’s the same bird because the seventh primary feather on the left wing is white in both of these photos.
The wings of this male Cardinal are folded against his body. That makes it look like he’s sitting on an invisible branch. I think he’s actually getting ready to land.
