April 17, 2016 - Texas - Green Jays

Here are some more photos from the great workshop I attended at the end of February, 2016. Green Jays were present at all of our non-raptor photo sessions. These beautiful birds are my wife’s favorite and I now have enough good shots to make a Green Jay screen saver for her.

Green Jays are tropical birds. In the United States, they are only found in the southern tip of Texas.

Here’s a close-up photo of a Green Jay. The black feathers above the eye stick up and make me think of eyebrows.

This photo captures all of the brilliant colors of a Green Jay. You can see blue, white, black, yellow, and green plumage.

These two Green Jays seemed comfortable being near each other. It makes me wonder if they were a mated pair.

I managed to catch this bird in mid-air as it was hopping from one place to another.

Green Jays and Blue Jays are in the same family, Corvidae. However, they are not closely related. Green Jays came to the United States from the south. Blue Jays, and many of our other jay species, originally came from Asia, over the land bridge that existed at one time.
