Sept. 13, 2015 - Coastline and Lighthouses
Read MoreHere are some scenic photos from our June, 2015, trip to coastal Maine and Prince Edward Island. Those of us who live in Minnesota might think this was a scene from the North Shore. The evergreen trees and rocky coastline are typical of that area. This photo was actually taken on Campobello Island, New Brunswick.

This is the international bridge that connects Lubec, Maine (on the far shore), to Campobello Island, New Brunswick. This photo was taken from the visitor center on Campobello Island. During our visit to the island, we toured the summer retreat of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR). He greatly loved the outdoors and truly enjoyed his time on the island. Eleanor Roosevelt spent even more time at the summer retreat than the President. She made her last visit in 1962 to dedicate the FDR Bridge.

Lighthouses were very important as navigational aids along the coastlines. There are two lighthouses on Campobello Island. This is the Mulholland Lighthouse and it stands right next to the FDR Bridge. The lighthouse was built in 1884 at a cost of $790. The light was added in 1885 and it cost $683.26. The navigational lights on the FDR Bridge made the lighthouse unnecessary so it was decommissioned in 1963. It is now part of the Roosevelt Campobello International Park.

We saw several other lighthouses on our trip. This one is located at North Cape on Prince Edward Island. Starting in 1834, there were many requests to build a lighthouse at North Cape where a long, rocky reef extended 1½ miles into the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Finally, in 1865, money was appropriated and this lighthouse was erected. In 1951 it had to be moved 400 feet inland because erosion of the shoreline threatened to topple the building.
The most picturesque lighthouse we saw was this one at West Quoddy Head State Park in Lubec, Maine. It’s located on the easternmost point of the United States. The first lighthouse on this sight was built in 1808. The one in this picture was erected in 1858. With its distinctive red stripes, it is often photographed and depicted in paintings.
