Oct. 25, 2015 - Lake Superior Boat Trip

During our late September visit to the North Shore, Diana and I took a Lake Superior boat excursion from Silver Bay to Split Rock Lighthouse and back. Spectacular sights like this are best seen from out on the water; it’s hard to get this view if you are standing on the shore.

The Lake Superior shoreline features many of these tall, rocky cliffs.

This is a small island just off the shoreline. Notice the Mountain Ash trees filled with bright red berries.

Being out on the water gave us a different view of Split Rock Lighthouse. Because it is perched high on this rocky cliff, its light could be seen for miles out on the lake.

This side view gives a good look at the massive rock base on which the lighthouse was built.

We also saw a Peregrine Falcon perched on a tree along the shore. The high rocky cliffs are favorite nesting places for these birds.
