Nov. 16, 2014 - Costa Rica - Flowers
Read MoreHeliconia plants are very common in Costa Rica and there are many varieties. I photographed this one at Arenal Observatory Lodge. The large red and yellow parts of the plant are actually bracts. The true flower is the small, hook-shaped yellow part sticking out the end of some of the bracts. When the flowers are pollinated, they develop into the bright blue seeds that are visible in this photo.

on November 15, 2014Hi Earl, gorgeous photos! Ethelle Henderson might be able to help you with the IDs. When I went to Costa Rica birding in '08 I photographed an iguana eating a hibiscus flower- apparently they are not only beautiful but delicious, too!
