April 27, 2014 - Funny Photos
Read MoreIf you take a lot of photos, you eventually end up with some that are just plain funny. Here are a few of mine from the last several months. This Western Gull was at Face Rock Wayside in Bandon, Oregon. It posed nicely on top of a huge rock so I was taking advantage of that and getting some nice shots. All of a sudden, it opened its mouth very wide and stuck its tongue out!
In March I attended the International Festival of Owls in Houston, Minnesota. One of the sessions featured live owls. The session was held in a gymnasium and the light was dim, so I had my camera set at a very low speed (1/20th of a second). Just as I clicked the shutter, this Short-eared Owl spun its head around. I’m amazed that the owl’s body stayed in focus; apparently the body didn’t move when the head turned. Perhaps one of the owl experts on my list can add a comment below to explain this (Karla??)
Here’s another Blue Crab from the Gulf Specimen Lab. It’s a very unusual all-white individual. This condition is called leucism. I have posted photos of some birds with this condition in previous “Picture of the Week” segments. Here’s a link to one of them. http://www.earlorfphotos.com/Pictures-of-the-Week/2010-Pictures-of-the-Week/3-28-2010-Leucistic-Chickadees/11610590_eudYg

on April 27, 2014I can't tell you specifically why owls turn their heads as they do, but I think this is pretty normal to turn the head without moving the body. What can I say...owls and their head turning ability are cool!
