Aug. 15, 2010 - Dunning Lake Photos

Here are some photos taken at our home on Dunning Lake in northern Minnesota. White Water Lilies are beautiful and abundant on our lake. This one was reflected by the early morning sun. The wind was calm that morning so the reflection looks almost as sharp as the actual flower.

Yellow Water Lilies bloom earlier than the white ones but there are still some around at this time of the year. As you can see in this photo, their flowers are much less showy; this is as far as they open up.

The pair of Common Loons that nest on our lake are very territorial. They chase away any other loons that show up during the nesting season. Now that their baby has hatched and is getting larger, the resident loons are much more relaxed. We often have other loons visiting the lake, usually in the morning. These might be birds whose nesting attempts have failed and they don’t have parenting duties, or they might just like fishing on our lake. Here is a group of seven adults that were peacefully co-existing one recent morning.

I guess I’m into photos with reflections this week. The unusual feature of this shot is that you can even see the reflection of the underside of the bill (the triangular reflection extending out from the breast of the bird).

Painted Turtles like to sun themselves so they climb out on any exposed piece of wood. On a larger log, it’s common to see as many as ten of them resting together. I guess you could say this one is just “hanging out and soaking up some rays.”
