July 26, 2009 New Brunswick and Nova Scotia
Read MoreBetween New Brunswick and Nova Scotia is the Bay of Fundy. The highest tides in the world occur here. We visited Hopewell Rocks Park ( http://www.thehopewellrocks.ca/English/parkinfo.htm ) which is in New Brunswick. In this picture, taken at low tide, and the next one, taken in the same location at high tide, you can see a dramatic example of the difference. These sandstone formations have been carved out over the years by wave action. The people in the photo give you some perspective on the size of the formations.
Here’s a photo at high tide. The day we visited, high tide was at 41.0 feet (12.5 meters for my Canadian friends). There are other places in the Bay of Fundy where they have tides of over 50 feet. The water has a chocolate brown color caused by suspended sediment stirred up by the constant motion of the tides.
At the entrance to the visitor center at Hopewell Rocks Park there were many moths and other insects clinging to the outside wall. I took photos of some of them. I uploaded the ones I couldn’t identify to one of my favorite websites: http://.bugguide.net . This one was identified as a Red-cross Shield Bug.
